We had a spare week so decided to
follow the family trace to Chasse sur Rhone. We have spent three
days photographing gravestones with not a lot of “eureka”
moments.
Strangely the earliest grave in the
Chasse cemetery is about 1830. This town was settled in the early
middle ages, the chapel dated from before 1600 so where did they bury
them? We spoke with the cemetery officer at the Mairie this
morning and the records were very patchy. She had no record of a
family member who died in 1879 – we had a photo of the stone. She
did refer to older records but they weren't available.
Interestingly the older graves list
women with their maiden names, and if married “widow” and husbands
surname, not first name. It makes for difficult for name matching
with a common name.
On to Montelimar to eat nougat.
